As LMSA prepares for its 17th Annual National Conference and the 50th anniversary of LMSA Northeast, we are holding a nationwide competition to create a flyer for the national conference! LMSA members from every region can join the competition and submit a flyer for a chance to win free admission to the LMSA national conference.

The conference theme is Cincuenta Años de Comunidad: Fostering Service, Health Equity, and Leadership and the conference will be taking place March 4-6th, 2022 in Philadelphia, PA. We will be judging flyers based on their creativity and their use of the conference theme.

Deadline for submission is June 26th and the winning artist will receive free admission to the national conference, conference swag and memorabilia, and credit for their artwork. A sample flyer from the 2021 national conference can be found in the Google form below.

I am excited to announce that the Minority Senior Scholarship Program (MSSP) is accepting applications for our 2021 cohort! The MSSP is a funded opportunity for fourth year medical students applying to pediatrics to rotate at Children’s National in Washington DC and gain exposure to academic pediatrics at a large, free standing children’s hospital. Our scholars receive supplemental mentorship, networking opportunities with current residents, as well as a stipend to offset the costs of travel and housing.

The University of Missouri – Columbia, School of Medicine is excited to announce that our Visiting Student Diversity Program is now accepting applications for rotations beginning August 1st, 2021! See the attached document for more information!

Visiting Student Diversity Program provides opportunities for 4th year medical students to do an elective rotation with the University of Missouri School of Medicine and MU Health Care. Selected students will participate in the clinical activities of the chosen department including conferences and other educational activities. Students will receive up to $950 for housing during their elective that may be accompanied by a stipend provided by the individual department to which the student is assigned.* Electives are available from July through February.

Eligibility

Students must be enrolled as a fourth-year student in an LCME-accredited institution at the time of the elective. Students who are members of groups underrepresented in medicine are encouraged to apply.

Tour for Diversity Pediatric Mentoring Circles, presented with funding from American Academy of Pediatrics with participation from the Association of Pediatric Program Directors- Application due March 8, 2021

The Tour for Diversity in Medicine (T4D) was established in 2012 as a grassroots effort to educate, inspire, & cultivate future health professionals of diverse racial and ethnic background by forming local connections in order to fulfill a national need. To foster the educational pipeline, T4D uses the experiences of current minority health professionals & graduate students.

In light of the global pandemic due to COVID-19, T4D began offering virtual mentorship programs from students from all backgrounds. For the 2020-2021 year, the organization was fortunate to obtain a grant from the American Academy of Pediatrics to establish the Pediatric Mentoring Circles to support diversification of the pediatric physician workforce, targeting students from historically underrepresented backgrounds in pediatrics. Pre-medical students with interests in pediatrics comprised the first cohort in Fall 2020. Fifty-five students were divided into faculty mentor groups. Students represented 16 states with >90% from underrepresented racial/ethnic backgrounds. Importantly, 42% of students had never attended a pipeline program, 65% are first generation college students, 75% will be the first healthcare worker in their family, and 100% would be the first physician in their family.

Similarly, Spring 2021 will be comprised of medical students with career aspirations for pediatrics. We aim to advance the physician workforce diversity for pediatrics through supporting students in these Pediatric Mentoring Circles. Our target is students who have not applied to residency yet, ie M1-M3 or dual degree candidate students (ie MD/DO-PhD). We will have virtual sessions with various types of programming including lectures, panels, and small group discussions. The focus will be on advancing students’ knowledge of the specialty and cultivating their interests for pediatrics as a residency specialty. This includes workshops on goal setting, addressing health disparities in pediatrics, and application tips. In addition to the funding from AAP, we are working with the Association of Pediatric Program Directors to increase our mentor pool to accommodate more students.

The Fall 2020 cohort was a competitive process and we expect the same for Spring 2021. This application will highlight your interest in pediatrics. Additionally, your email address will be used to send you an additional survey that will NOT be used for acceptance into the program; this will come at a later date as it is pending IRB approval. All students who apply, regardless of participation in the program, will receive the surveys. We appreciate your response to the survey.

Please be sure that you can participate in all of the required sessions – mark your calendars NOW as all events are from 7-8p eastern: March 15, April 12, May 10, June 14, July 12, August 9, & September 13. The application will close on March 8, 2021 with acceptances by March 12, 2021.
