The original name of the national organization was the National Network of Latin American Medical Students (NNLAMS).
In 2008, the NNLAMS adopted the name Latino Medical Student Association, which historically was associated with what is now the West region. All regions at this time decided to adopt this name and the logo.
In 2011, the LMSA National organization and its five regions modified the logo in the following ways:
Replacing the caduceus with the rod of Asclepius.
Adding five stars at the top for each region.
Continuing the tradition of eagle wings, originally from the Farm Workers Movement in the West region.
